Vocabulary

1.) Encomium- A formal expression of high praise;eulogy.
     Ex: Examples of her poetry and an ENCOMIUM of it will be found else where.
2.) Coherent- Logically connected; consistent.
     Ex: It's funny seeing people having an INCOHERENT argument.
3.) Belabor- To explain,worry about, or work out repeatedly or more than necessary.
     Ex: There is no need to belabor the wobbly nature of this third term.
4.) Eschew- To abstain or keep away from; shun; avoid.
     Ex: Shallow, frost-protected foundations eschew site excavation costs.
5.) Acquisitive- Tending or seeking to acquire and own, often greedily.
     Ex: The common denominator was humanity's productive and acquisitive nature.
6.) Emulate- To try to equal or excel.
     Ex: Computer designers will have to emulate this somehow.
7.) Arrogate-To attribute or assign to another.
     Ex: Governments arrogate to themselves the right to do essentially anything they please.
8.) Banal- Devoid of freshness or originality.
     Ex: A banal or sophomoric treatment of courage on the frontier.
9.) Excoriation- To strip the skin of a human or an animal.
     Ex: Humans have excoriating parts on their body.
10.) Congeal- To curdle; coagulate, as a fluid.
       Ex: There's a fat congeal on the top of the soup.
11.) Carping- Characterized by fussy petulant faultfinding.
       Ex: That man was giving him carping criticism.
12.) Substantiate- To establish by proof or oe competent evidence.
       Ex: Yesterday I substantiated a charge.
13.) Temporize- To treat or parley so as to gain time.
       Ex: The government felt that it cannot temporize with the difficulty any further.
14.) Largesse- Generous bestowal of gifts.
       Ex: Usually, news for such largesse would be caused for celebration.
15.) Tenable- Capable of being held, maintained, or defended.
       Ex: Many  scientist have tenable theories.
16.) Insatiable-Incapable of being satisfied or pleased.
       Ex: I have an insatiable hunger for knowledge.
17.) Reconnaissance- The act of reconnoitering.
       Ex: They are now used for reconnaissance and as porters.
18.) Germane- Obsolete. Closely related.
       Ex: Please keep your comments germane to the statemant.
19.) Ramify- To divide or spread out into branches.
       Ex: They supply the muscular coat. ramify in the submucous coat.
20.) Intransigent- Refusing to agree or compromise.
       Ex: He began his own intransigent style.

Young Goodman Brown ''Symbols''

1.) Young Goodman Brown's wife, known as Faith, with her ribbons on her cap symbolizes good/positive in the story.
2.) When Goodman Brown compares Faith as an angel symbolizes good and purity.
3.) When the author said '' He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees in the forest'' he symbolizes evil/bad influences or negetivity.
4.) When the author states '' It was deep dusk in the forest, and deepest in that part of it where these two were journeying'' it symbolizes that something was wrong in the direction he was headed.
5.) The serpent on the old man's staff symbolizes evil/negativity.
6.) The old man symbolizes the devil himself!
7.) When the old man tries to convince Goodman Brown to continue on the path it symbolizes that he wants Goodman Brown to do evil.
8.) When the author says '' We are a people of prayer, and good work to boot, and abide no suck wickedness'' that the old man is trying to convince him to do evil.
9.) The old lady/Goodman Brown's old tutor symbolized a witch.
10.) The story itself symbolizes a message that has to do with the struggle of good and evil.

Meanings, Signs and Symbols

       Humans are relatively similar to animals because we all descended from a common ancestor. Why were humans given the ability to think and reason? How come no other animal on the planet has the same ability? Are humans able to acquire the same strength as chimpanzees and if not, why?

Vocabulary:Fall List #2

1.) Intercede- To plead on another's behalf. ( To intercede with the governor for a condemned man.)
2.) Hackneyed- Overused and thus cheapened. ( The hackneyed images of his poetry.)
3.) Approbation- Praise, commendation. ( We thirst for approbation, yet cannot forgive the approver.)
4.) Innuendo- An indirect intimation about a person or thing. ( The rumor and innuendo you're hearing about controller salaries is particularly vexing.)
5.) Coalition- A combination or alliance, especially a temporary one between persons, factions, states, etc.. ( Instead, funding can come from a coalition of foundations.
6.) Elicit- To draw out or forth; evoke; educe. ( Remember to always tell the elicit truth.)
7.) Hiatus- A break or interruption in the continuity of a work, series, action, etc. ( Inflation and low wage increases are gradually eroding the disposable income of everybody leading to a retail hiatus.
8.) Assuage- To make milder or less severe. ( The doctor's duty is to assuage one's pain.)
9.) Decadence- The act or process pf falling into an inferior condition or state. ( Some historians hold that the fall of Rome can be attributed to internal decadence.)
10.) Expostulate- To reason earnestly with someone against something that person intends to do or has done. ( His father expostulated with him about the evils of gambling.)
11.) Simulate- To create a simulation, likeness, or model. ( We need to work together to simulate crisis conditions.)
12.) Jaded- Dulled or satiated be overindulgence. ( I have a jaded appetite.)
13.) Umbrage- Offense; annoyance; displeasure. ( Yesterday I gave umbrage to Grecia.)
14.) Prerogative- An exclusive right, privilege, etc., exercised by virtue of rank. ( I don't understand the prerogatives of a senator.)
15.) Lurid- Gruesome; horrible; revolting. ( The lurid details of an accident.)
16.) Transcend- To rise above or go beyond; overpass, exceed. ( To transcend the limits of thoughts.)
17.) Provincial- Belonging to peculiar to some particular province; local. ( The dog fetched the provincial newspaper.)
18.) Petulant- Moved to or showing sudden; impatient irritation, especially over some trifling annoyance. ( A petulant toss to the head.)
19.) Unctuous- Characterized by excessive piousness or moralistic fervor, specially in an affected manner. ( When bitten they collapsed with an unctuous squelch.)
Meritorious- Deserving praise reward, esteem, etc. ( I received a gift for meritorious service.)

Hack to School Night

1.) The purpose of this class is to help us gain knowledge and to become a better writer and/or reader. In other words to improve our skills. Also this class prepares us for college and life.
2.) One thing that I have read and written about in Dr. Preston's class is the right to your own opinion. It's true about how you are entitled to their opinion, but just because they have their mind set on their opinion, it doesn't mean they shouldn't take anyone elses opinion for consideration.
3.) So far the easiest thing we've done was to memorize the ''Richard Cory'' poem, by Edwin Arlington Robinson. The hardest thing we've done in this class was the first vocabulary quiz because in the order tp complete we had to know the words specifically by their definition.
4.)My goals for next grading period is to earn a GPA of 4.0.
5.) A socratic seminar is where a group of people gather and discuss about a topic. A blog is a device that we use to post our work, ideas, etc. It's also a way to communicate with our peers and Dr. Preston.

Young Goodman Brown

Observations:
1. Goodman Brown is more concerned with his wifes safety than his own.
2.) It kind of seems like Goodman Brown doesn't really believe what the older companion is telling him about his grandpa and his father.
Questions:
1.) Why does Goodman Brown continue to travel with him when he really wants to head back to him wife?
2.) Why does the old man have a staff with a serpent on it, what does it represent?
